Enjoy an evening of classical music and gallery art with the Barton Community College Orchestra’s spring concert “Classical Ventures” at 7:30 p.m. April 16, in the Shafer Art Gallery. Music by Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Rota, Handel and Jenkins will be presented. The concert is free and open to the public.

Dance enthusiasts can take the opportunity to gain valuable experience as a dancer in a company setting. Barton Community College is hosting auditions for its dance company, Barton Dance Theater, from 10-11:15 a.m. Saturday, April 14 in Studio 34, located in the Sunflower housing units on Barton’s campus. Check in is at 9:30 a.m.

Barton Community College will offer a grant-funded two-week certificate program at no cost to transitioning Fort Carson Soldiers and family members with Department of Defense ID cards.

The Hazardous Waste Worker (HWW) program gives Soldiers credentials to help them find work after their tenure in the US Army ends. The next course is set from May 7-18 at Truman Education Center B3281 on post.

The Barton Community College Music Department will host the Mid-America Woodwind Quintet at 7:30 p.m. April 15 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel located in Barton’s Fine Arts Building. This outstanding quintet is composed of a flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and French horn. The recital is free and open to the public.

The drought hasn’t lessened with the area in extreme drought and the outlook isn’t promising.  As if that wasn’t enough to worry about, the area has experienced well below freezing air temperatures (the low 20s) for an extended period of time twice in the last week which while not rare is certainly uncommon for the first week of April.  So what does this mean for the 2018 wheat crop?  As is almost always the case, there isn’t a cut and dry answer.

Barton Community College’s Community Service Organization and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will host a 5K walk/run 8 a.m. Sunday, April 29. Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. in the Fine Arts circle drive at Barton. All proceeds will be donated to Camp Hope.

The course begins and ends at Barton. There will be two groups: 16 and over and 15 and under. The top three finishers in each group will be awarded immediately following the race.

Barton Community College will present a student recital of instrumental and vocal performances at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 5 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel, located in the Fine Arts Building, F-157.  The recital is free.
