Barton Community College will host its ninth annual Sidewalk Art Contest May 2-4 on the sidewalk outside the Shafer Art Gallery.

The contest is open to anyone who wants to participate. Artists need to register and pick up their free chalk at the Shafer Gallery between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any of the three days. Artists must have their work completed by 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 4.

Let’s take today and catch up a bit on what has happened in the Golden Belt as the month of May is almost here.  Now through the end of June is an extremely busy time for crop producers and for that matter, livestock producers.

The Barton Theatre Department will hold its last performance of the school year, the Thespian Showcase, at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 4 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. 

Barton’s Concert Choir performs at last year’s Endowment Concert.  Scholarships funded by proceeds from the concert are a vital part of attracting new music students.

The Barton Planetarium will feature movies utilizing the full-dome projection system this spring. The Planetarium is located in the Science Building. Enter through the sliding doors on the north side.  Admission is free.

Last week’s column dealt with the weed named the number one weed problem for 2016 – Palmer amaranth, a pigweed species.  This week let’s broaden the focus a bit and include not just this weed species but all common problem weeds, especially those that have developed resistance to herbicides, especially Roundup® (glyphosate).

Barton Community College’s Community Service Organization and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will host a 5K walk/run at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 7. Registration will be at 7:15 a.m. in the Fine Arts circle drive at Barton. All proceeds will be donated to Camp Hope.

The course begins and ends at Barton. There will be two groups: 16 and over and 15 and under. There will be awards for the top three finishers in each group and they will be presented immediately following the race.
